94° Mercoledì di Nexa - An Integrated Domain: visions of a Connected Future | Nexa Center for Internet & Society

Visions of the future are often framed by the technologies that shape them. This is readily apparent in popular culture’s treatment of the future over the past 50 years. Several recurring themes of these fictional projections have become contemporary concerns in 2017: the specter of artificial intelligence, the rise of robots, virtual worlds, and the existential question of self in an increasingly distributed and fragmented reality. All of which points to an increasingly technological mediation of both reality and identity, raising the larger question of how we are managing these changes culturally.

Jim Groom

“Foul, Small-Minded Deities”: On Giorgio De Maria’s “The Twenty Days of Turin” - Los Angeles Review of Books

The Twenty Days of Turin is uncanny both in terms of its subject matter and in the way it prefigures the emotional reality of our own period. This is a book written in 1975 and featuring no technology more advanced than high-end analog audio recordings, yet it grasps the implications of social media in ways cyberpunk never did. It’s a book steeped in the idiosyncratic culture of Turin that speaks to psychic elements of crises now gripping much of the world. The Twenty Days of Turin depicts how the past overflows the feeble efforts of the present to make its own future; in that, it may be the novel that foreshadows our moment more accurately than any number of speculative fictions.

Minimal WordPress

Sometimes people just want a little bit of WordPress. Before hanging a left with the anth101.com site, we pruned it waaaaay down and tried to make it as simple as possible. This is a pretty solid example that WordPress can be just about anything you want if you’re willing to put in a bit of time and effort. I figure having all these things in one place will help someone else (me most likely) at some point.

Jim Groom

ANTH 101 Rebirth

I had the chance to work more on the ANTH 101 site with Ryan and Mike over winter break. It’s a pretty significant change. It’s almost entirely gutted in terms of the WordPress side of things with a different theme, some new plugins etc. but also some significant changes on how student see and interact with the work they make.

.io British Indian Ocean Territory

.io is one of the fastest-growing top-level domains on the internet, a particular favourite among start-ups and technology companies. It's also one of the most expensive. To the ear of the tech-savvy, “io” sounds like “input/output”, and it’s used for everything from business software and databases to bitcoin and blogs. But like all the other domains we’ve looked at, .io is also a place: a country-code top-level domain, or ccTLD, which refers to a particular place on the Earth's surface. In this case, that place is the British Indian Ocean Territory, a remote but strategically-important scattering of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, also known as the Chagos Archipelago.

What does it mean to “own” a digital good – a domain name or otherwise? This strikes me as an incredibly important question for society (for students) to wrestle with, and it’s a question that is made explicit through the Domain of One’s Own initiative.

Learn to Let Go: How Success Killed Duke Nukem

To videogame fans, that logo is instantly recognizable. It’s the insignia of Duke Nukem 3D, a computer game that revolutionized shoot-’em-up virtual violence in 1996. Featuring a swaggering, steroidal, wisecracking hero, Duke Nukem 3D became one of the top-selling videogames ever, making its creators very wealthy and leaving fans absolutely delirious for a sequel. The team quickly began work on that sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, and it became one of the most hotly anticipated games of all time.

python - sys.argv[1] meaning in script - Stack Overflow

I note that previous answers made lots of assumptions about the user's knowledge. This answer attempts to answer the question at a more tutorial level. For every invocation of Python, sys.argv is automatically a list of strings representing the arguments (as separated by spaces) on the command-line. The name comes from the C programming convention in which argv and argc represent the command line arguments. You'll want to learn more about lists and strings as you're familiarizing yourself with Python, but it the meantime, here are a few things to know. You can simply create a script that prints the arguments as they're represented. It also prints the number of arguments, using the len function on the list.

Software cracking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The High Cracking University (+HCU), was founded by Old Red Cracker (+ORC), considered a genius of reverse engineering and a legendary figure in RCE, to advance research into Reverse Code Engineering (RCE). He had also taught and authored many papers on the subject, and his texts are considered classics in the field and are mandatory reading for students of RCE.[12] The addition of the "+" sign in front of the nickname of a reverser signified membership in the +HCU. Amongst the students of +HCU were the top of the elite Windows reversers worldwide.[12] +HCU published a new reverse engineering problem annually and a small number of respondents with the best replies qualified for an undergraduate position at the university.[12]

Old Red Cracker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Old Red Cracker (abbreviate +ORC) is a pseudonym/handle for a reverser that wrote the now famous +ORC "how to crack" lessons. He was one of the pioneers of publishing cracking lessons on the Internet and therefore very well known among the reverser scene. Not much is known about +ORC since he has never revealed his identity but he has left clues and puzzles on how to reach him.[1] This has led to so called "+ORC Stalking" where individuals have tried to find out who he really is. Some have speculated that he might be from Europe but this has never been confirmed. Among people who have tried to find +ORC's true identity is +Fravia who has even had email correspondence with him and spread his tutorials.[2]

This ain’t no Rotoscope – 106 drop in

As usual it started with a tweet: Follow Jim Groom @jimgroom @mdvfunes @phb256 @johnjohnston So this would be an excellent example of SPLOT, port to a web version and bam https://twitter.com/cartoonbrew/status/748189825166086144 … 12:54 PM - 30 Jun 2016 Retweets likes The referenced tweet looked interesting: Follow Cartoon Brew @cartoonbrew RT for the early birds... https://twitter.com/cartoonbrew/status/747963901397078016 … 6:22 PM - 29 Jun 2016 2 2 Retweets 6 6 likes I’ve tried Rotoscoping before, but this looked good. I hied over to MacOS/OSX – Paint of Persia community – itch.io, read about it. paid $5 and set things up. At that point I realise that the app helps you to manually trace frames, seemed a wee bit time consuming. I though I’d leave it for another day. I did start musing on doing something similar, I was thinging FFmpeg & ImageMagick. Google takes me to Fred’s ImageMagick Scripts: CARTOON. so the plan is: export a movie to a series of images. cartoonise those image create a move from the cartoon images Bounus points for getting the sound track back in. I already have ffmpeg & imagemagick installed on my mac. These are commandline tools. I downloaded the cartoon script First find a video: YouTube downloader tool – Fastesttube! Rename the downloaded file shower.mp4 Open the terminal and cd into the folder that has the cartoon script and the movie in it. First extract lots of still images (make a folder shower first mkdir shower): ffmpeg -i shower.mp4 -r 6 shower/out_%04d.jpg this takes the input file (-i) at 6 frames per second and create jpg files in the shower folder with the file name out_0001.jpg ,out_0002.jpg ect Given the movie is 3 minutes 22 seconds long I end up with 1212 images in the folder. I delete the last few manually to give me 1023 images. I now need to loop through all of those images and create a cartoon version. the use of cartoon is basically: ./cartoon face.jpg temp.jpg There are some paramaters you can use but I stuck to the default. This would take the image on the left and create the one on the right: face.out So I move into the shower folder cd shower mkdir out;for i in *.jpg; do ../cartoon $i out/$i.jpg;done this script: makes a nother folder called out for i in *.jpg for each file with a .jpg extension in the current folder do does: ../cartoon $i out/$i.jpg runs the cartoon script from the folder above (../), and saves the output file in the out folder with the same name. When I kicked this off I quickly realised it would take a while to r=un through 1212 images, so went to bed. The next morning I have 1023 cartoons (I don’t imagine that it took all night). out_0672 Time to stich these together, it took me a few goes to get the paramaters right. (google helps). ffmpeg -f image2 -framerate 6 -i out_%04d.jpg -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p out.mp4 -f chooses the format image2 which makes an image sequence. -framerate 6 to get the smae length of movie as I started with -i infiles confusinging names out_0001.jpg ect the %04d means look for 4 figured numbers starting with 0001 -c codec -pix_fmt is the pixel format, I dn’t know much about these but the script failed until I added it in It took me a few shots until I got this right. I then moved the out.mp4 video to the same folder as the original and ffmpeg -i shower.mp4 -acodec copy -vn shower-audio.mp4 To extract the audio from the original file. then: ffmpeg -i out.mp4 -i shower-audio.mp4 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -shortest final.mp4 To add the audio from the original to the out video to give me a final one. the -shortest parameter gets rid of the audio at the end to make up for the frames I removed. Bingo: Video Player At this point I remembered iMovie has a comic filter… This post is mostly as an aid to my occasional dip into the world of commandline video editing. Posting helps me remember. It also plays a wee bit fast and loose with copyright.

A Simple Guide to Connecting your PC and Commodore Disk Drive

Most of this document has been obsoleted when I designed the ZoomFloppy, a USB adapter that works similar to these X-cables. However, the section on installing a parallel cable in the drive still applies and the basic concepts are still useful. Intro There are a number of ways to connect the C64 or PC to your Commodore disk drive. The X1541-series of cables provides multiple ways to do so, some obsolete today. It is very difficult to figure out which combination of cables and adapters you need. This document attempts to clear up the confusing terminology. I include links for each term to the appropriate section of Joe Forster's X1541 cable pages. If you want to purchase a cable instead of making it yourself, he has a shop for buying them. Just be absolutely sure you understand what you want and know what you're getting before placing an order.

JiffyDOS/uIEC/SD Questions - Commodore 64 (C64) Forum

- I've purchased a uIEC/SD with Daughterboard from Jim Brain's site, just awaiting on new ones to come in. In the meantime, I picked up a 2 GB SD card and wanted to prep it beforehand. - Should the card be formatted FAT16 or FAT32, or does it matter? Fat32 is best, but I don't think you will have trouble with Fat16 - Can I just need to copy over all my files over in their respective folders yes, or do they need to be set up in some specific configuration? doesn't matter - Is there any file/folder name character length limit that I need to stick to? No, but if you want to view all the characters, make sure it is still in the normal Commodore disk restrictions (about 16 characters). - Is there any problems reading upper/lower case, or should I convert all the file/folder names to upper or lower case? No probs - What bootloader should I put on the card to help with loading? How do I install the bootloader on the card so it'll run? You don't need one unless you update the firmware. Second question is about JiffyDOS. I picked up the ROM overlay on Jim's site as well, but now have no idea how to actually overlay the ROM onto my C-64. You need to have an EEPROM burner to make your own chip. - How do you upgrade the C-64 with the ROM image? Do I do that with the uIEC/SD? You can't do that. - I noticed a $20 Kernal ROM image with a toggle switch also available. Should I have gotten that one? Yes, sounds like you should have. You might be able to get a refund if you buy that one.

MacPorts Guide

MacPorts is an easy to use system for compiling, installing, and managing open source software. MacPorts may be conceptually divided into two main parts: the infrastructure, known as MacPorts base, and the set of available ports. A MacPorts port is a set of specifications contained in a Portfile that defines an application, its characteristics, and any files or special instructions required to install it. This allows you to use a single command to tell MacPorts to automatically download, compile, and install applications and libraries. But using MacPorts to manage your open source software provides several other significant advantages.

ack The day cars drove themselves into walls and the hospitals froze A scenario that could happen based on what already has. Illustrations by R. Kikuo Johnson On December 4, 2017, at a little before nine in the morning, an executive at Goldman Sachs was swiping through the day’s market report in the backseat of a hired SUV heading south on the West Side Highway when his car suddenly swerved to the left, throwing him against the window and pinning a sedan and its driver against the concrete median. A taxi ran into the SUV’s rear fender and spun into the next lane, forcing a school-bus driver to slam on his brakes. Within minutes, nothing was moving from the Intrepid to the Whitney. When the Goldman exec came to, his driver swore that the crash hadn’t been his fault: The car had done it.1

Nanni Balestrini’s We Want Everything (Vogliamo tutto), published in 1971, captures an explosive moment of worker militancy in Italy during 1969. It is the story of one man, told by a narrator whose experiences are based on those of the worker and militant Alfonso Natella. It is also, however, the collective story of workers from the Italian south who arrived at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin during the 1960s. These workers were described, in approving terms, by the Italian radical political theorist Mario Tronti as a ‘crude, pagan race’. Balestrini’s narrator says of these new workers: ‘The monsters were coming, the horrible workers’ (WWE 65).

Digital inheritance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Digital inheritance is the process of handing over (personal) digital media in the form of digital assets and rights to (human) beneficiaries. The process includes understanding what digital assets and rights exist and dealing with them after a person has died. Digital media play an increasingly important role in life. The media in which a digital inheritance resides can be owned by or independent of the deceased. In contrast with physical assets, digital assets are ephemeral and subject to constant change. Intellectual property and privacy are additional factors. Digital inheritance may present a challenge for data heirs in its complexity and intricacy, and may have legal implications. With the average person having multiple online accounts, digital inheritance has become a complex issue.

Round and round | raptnrent.me

Profound words of wisdom from 80’s hair-metal masters, Ratt. These came to mind as I was reading Roland Barth’s 1977 look back at open education. I was also reminded of my experience weeding the Education section of our library collection, when I found book after book from the 70s examining issues that are still being examined today. What goes around comes around, give it time. Open education meant something different to Barth though. It was a term created by American education researchers to describe practices that were going on in British primary education in the 1960s. Their practices were not coordinated or based on any grand theory, but rather something that grew out of the conditions of the times.

How to connect a Commodore 64 or 128 to a modem - The Silicon Underground

The Aprotek Minimodem-C24, at 2400 bps, was the fastest modem that plugged straight into a Commodore without an interface. With an interface, any Hayes-compatible modem will work just fine, keeping in mind the hardware limitations. Novaterm was the name of a C-64 program that could go to 4800 baud with an ordinary RS-232 interface. DesTerm could reach 9600 baud on a C-128, since the 128 had a faster CPU. Most software didn’t support the 6551-based cartridges, but Novaterm and DesTerm did, so you can use the same program with a 6551 to get higher speeds out of a Commodore with an RS-232 (serial) modem.

Domain Awareness Center - Oakland - LocalWiki

The Domain Awareness Center (DAC) is a planned surveillance hub which aims to integrate public and private cameras and sensors all over the City of Oakland into one $10.9M mass surveillance system. After mounting opposition to DAC in 2013 and 2014, The Oakland City Council voted on March 4, 2014 to restrict DAC to a primarily Port-focused operation by removing citywide ShotSpotter maps and city traffic cameras from the system, and requiring any further expansion or information-sharing decisions to come before the Council for approval. Needless to say, this issue is highly controversial, and not only here in Oakland: many US cities, and other cities worldwide, are watching closely to see how Oakland’s example will play out.

Net Art Generations

19 November 2013: I don't remember when I made these notes, must be the end of 2007 Net art can be divided into more than just two generations like old and new or 1.0 and 2.0, or internet and post internet. There are at least three plus one more. The 1st -- Artists working with the Internet as a new medium. Coming from other backgrounds, like film, performance, photography, whatever. It is a special condition: the medium is not new because it is fresh, it is new for you, because you have other/previous/old experiences -- and now you are translating them, trying yourself in a medium you subjectively see as new. The 2nd -- Studied jodi at university. I mean artists who were trained to pay attention to the Internet, understand the concept of media specificity, who see their work in relation to projects previously created. The Last -- Net artist active in between dot.com crash and web 2.0 rise. I'm talking about circa 2000--2005. I can still remember very well these dark years. Bubbles busted, there were no new events or festivals or journalists willing to write about things online. Fellows were leaving to make installations, announced retirement. Researchers wouldn't hesitate to talk about the death of net art in the presence of net artists who were still working, online or offline, doing the projects about the Internet. The 3rd -- artists working with the WWW as mass medium, not new medium.

Whilst virtual participants won’t eat your food or sit in your venue there is still expenditure in resourcing and organising events. OER16 would not be happening if it were not for all the hours invested by the programme committee and other supporters. We also encounter the challenge for OER events that ‘open’ equals ‘free’. This area was recently touched upon by Martin Weller in his ‘Positive openness’ post:

Docker as a Personal Application Runner | OUseful.Info, the blog...

This is not so much thinking of Docker from an enterprise perspective as an environment that supports development and auto-scaled deployment of containerised applications and services, nor is it a view that a web hosting service might take of Docker images providing an appropriate packaging format for the self-service deployment of long-lived services, such as blogs or wiki applications, (a Docker hub and deployment system to rival cPanel, for example). Instead, it’s a user-centric, rather than devops-centric view, seeing containers from a single user, desktop perspective, seeing Docker and its ilk as providing an environment that can support off-the-shelf, ready to run tools and applications, that can be run locally or in the cloud, individually or in concert with each other.

Southdale 1956 Richfield Edina Shopping Mall History Video - YouTube

Opened in 1956, Southdale Center in Edina, MN was the first fully enclosed shopping mall of its kind. Designed by Victor Gruen, it became the archetype of the typical American mall. Malcolm Gladwell's New Yorker piece about Gruen is a great read. Southdale Mall still exists. It is situated off I-494, south of downtown Minneapolis and west of the airport -- a big concrete box in a sea of parking. The anchor tenants are now J.C. Penney and Marshall Field's, and there is an Ann Taylor and a Sunglass Hut and a Foot Locker and just about every other chain store that you've ever seen in a mall. It does not seem like a historic building, which is precisely why it is one. Fifty years ago, Victor Gruen designed a fully enclosed, introverted, multitiered, double-anchor-tenant shopping complex with a garden court under a skylight -- and today virtually every regional shopping center in America is a fully enclosed, introverted, multitiered, double-anchor-tenant complex with a garden court under a skylight. Victor Gruen didn't design a building; he designed an archetype. For a decade, he gave speeches about it and wrote books and met with one developer after another and waved his hands in the air excitedly, and over the past half century that archetype has been reproduced so faithfully on so many thousands of occasions that today virtually every suburban American goes shopping or wanders around or hangs out in a Southdale facsimile at least once or twice a month. Victor Gruen may well have been the most influential architect of the twentieth century. He invented the mall. Things were changing even as that piece was published in 2004. Sprawling shopping malls are closing and new construction has slowed dramatically. Commerce moved online and to big box stores. Southdale's still kicking though! http://kottke.org/16/04/video-footage-from-1956-of-the-first-american-shopping-mall

More Evidence for Lead Poisoning as Key Crime Driver

Over the years I've written a number of posts about the Crime Wave of the Late 20th Century, its causes, political repercussions and the long shadow it still casts over our society. What drove the rise of crime starting in the mid-1960s and its precipitous fall from the early-mid-1990s is no mere matter of historical interest. Today we talk a lot about mass incarceration, the militarization of policing and various other excesses of policing and corrections. But our ability to do so, to have any political shot at change is heavily, heavily tied to the drop of crime over the last 25 years. If crime shoots back up again, we're back to the political environment of the 70s and 80s that created mass incarceration and all the rest. But we can't have any confidence that it won't shoot up again if we don't have a clear idea why it dropped in the first place or, for that matter, why it started spiking thirty years earlier.

Storage space is a potential issue, so I wanted to offload that to S3. I wondered how to connect the two, so I googled it and what do you know? Jim wrote up a walk-through a few months ago. This was kind of a lifesaver because the process involves typing some arcane gibberish in both the S3 settings and the Omeka config.ini file. I ran into a problem with the Amazon endpoint. Apparently you (or I) do need to specify the endpoint, which means figuring out what it is. The nice people at Reclaim helped me out with that. My S3 account is in the US West region for some reason, so the endpoint is https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com.

Report on Lightweight Digital Collections Platforms

Our team started with a curiosity about Scalar and along the way formed a collaboration with two graduate students to compare it with three similar services. These “lightweight digital collection platforms” as we call them each have potential to fit the needs of students, staff, and faculty who want to build their own digital collection. Supporting this kind of scholarship using these tools today is very challenging, however, because none of them quite meet all of the requirements. In the end, we found ourselves imagining a drupal-based cloud platform and service designed for small digital collections, which we call “drupal.edu”.

Maybe the most important legacy of the bands in the book is an approach that [Minutemen’s] Mike Watt outlines in Our Band Could Be Your Life: “We just could never see mass acceptance of our music. But that didn’t make it little to us—it was still important. But if we were going to do it, we had to make sure the dream fit the tent. A massive bourgeois tent would be too much dead weight. Let’s just carry enough to get us there.” That is the crux of the book and it applies more than ever today, as making music becomes even less lucrative than it ever was.

Fugazi Live Series: A to Z

Fugazi is a band from Washington, D.C. featuring Ian MacKaye, Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. They played their first show on September 3, 1987, and have since released seven albums and played over 1000 concerts, covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. The band is self-managed and release all their material through Dischord Records. Fugazi always made sure their concerts were open to people of all-ages and were ticketed at a reasonable price, usually $5 to $7. Over 800 of these shows were recorded by the band's sound engineers, Joey Picuri and Nick Pellicciotto, often on high-quality recording gear. The goal of this project is to create a complete archive of the Fugazi live experience and to make these recordings available. Show pages will include data from the concerts and well as photos and flyers when possible. Initially the band released 100 concert downloads (in addition to the 30 shows released on the now out of print Fugazi Live Series CDs) and new downloads will be added on a monthly basis until the entire archive has been made available. In keeping with the band's philosophy of keeping music affordable, the suggested price of a concert download is $5. However, we also offer a sliding scale option where you can set your own price. Additionally, we offer an All Access option for $500 that will allow you to download every show on the site – that would include all 130 presently available downloads as well as all subsequent shows (800+) that will be added to the site over time. If you are interested in purchasing this option, click here.

Who's Responsible for the Demise of America's Public Research Universities? - The Atlantic

According to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ recently completed Lincoln Project report, between 2008 and 2013 states reduced financial support to top public research universities by close to 30 percent. At the same time, these states increased support of prisons by more than 130 percent. New York City’s budget office reported in 2013 that incarcerating a person in a state prison cost the city roughly $168,000 a year. California apparently does it on the cheap: It costs roughly $64,000 annually for each prisoner—a bit more than the cost of a year at an Ivy League university (average tuition is $50,000) and far more than at the University of California, Berkeley, ($13,000) or at CUNY ($8,000).

Indie Ed-Tech

This is what DoOO fosters and where indie ed-tech in general holds the most promise in my mind. As it pushes back on Silicon Valley and corporate priorities (i.e., procurement, digital courseware, the LMS, etc.), it simultaneously pushes back on our own institutional structures that, intentionally or not, prop up those corporate priorities.

Welcome to Massive: The Future of Learning Week 1

For the first three weeks of the course, we'll be exploring three genres of large scale learning: MOOCs, intelligent tutors, and interest-driven learning communities. In the second three weeks of the course, we'll explore three problems that emerge repeatedly across the genres, I call them the Paradox of Free, the Paradox of Routine, and the Paradox of the Familiar. Each of these are design challenges that emerge from the efforts to create large scale online learning environments.

“No, I’ve always been a bartender.” | raptnrent.me

Here is Jim and I talking about My Darling Clementine, John Ford’s classic Western. Jim brought up the noir connections, and there are many, but one we sort of missed was cinematographer Joseph MacDonald’s pedigree. The visual style of noir wasn’t just something he was emulating, it’s something he helped create. I brought up the true crime connections, in particular the questions about the truth in true crime that came up during our course on the topic. Stuart Lake’s biography of Wyatt Earp, which served as source material for the film, established Earp’s legend among the myths of the Old West, but both Lake and Earp did a lot of embellishing on the truth of his story. Ford was more interested in making a good movie than in any historical accuracy.

The Rise of the Shadow LMS | edutechnica

Over time, these products are adding more and more features that one might normally expect to see in a LMS – giving weight to Norman’s Law of E-learning Tool Convergence: Any eLearning tool, no matter how openly designed, will eventually become indistinguishable from a Learning Management System once a threshold of supported use-cases has been reached.

A Flexible and Personal Learning Environment | edutechnica

The third is an architectural perspective from a case study contributed by Erasmus University Rotterdam that elevates the importance of APIs in constructing such a learning environment. I am a huge fan of APIs and believe that they will play an increasingly central role to make learning technologies work better together in ways that current approaches cannot. (On a random side note, check out this recent coverage about a recent event that focused on “Indie” ed-tech and personal learning APIs. There really are many great ideas out there – too many to cover in any one post or at any one event.)

How BYU Will Use APIs to Give Students Control of Their Data | ProgrammableWeb

BYU, however, is upping the ante with their API; they believe sovereign-source identity is the way of the future. Sovereign-source identity is another way of saying that one’s identity is autonomously derived. In respect to BYU’s new API, this means that project director Phil Windley wants students to actively define themselves online. Up until this point, most students gave their personal information to their university. After this, they had no control over who saw it or what happened to it. “We want to teach students that this isn’t the only way identity happens online. They can create their own,” says Windley. BYU’s API is meant to serve as the middleman between student and university, allowing the university to access a student’s data only under the consent of the student.

Orkestra Obsolete play Blue Monday using 1930s instruments - BBC Arts - YouTube

More information: http://bbc.in/1SC6Atc New Order's Blue Monday was released on 7 March 1983, and its cutting-edge electronic groove changed pop music forever. But what would it have sounded like if it had been made 50 years earlier? In a special film, using only instruments available in the 1930s - from the theremin and musical saw to the harmonium and prepared piano - the mysterious Orkestra Obsolete present this classic track as you've never heard it before.

How Personal APIs Let Students Design Their University | EdSurge News

At the core of the personal API is the radical mission to put control over data (and its access) in the hands of students. This is both a pedagogical act and a creative opportunity, informing students that they can access their own information as well as create interfaces to do with that data what they please. It gives them a seat at the tables where the edtech powers sit, moving them one step closer to a status of equality rather than that of a passive consumer.

Everything Is Crumbling ~ Stephen Downes

We see an awful lot in our field about what "the research tells us", typically stated in such a way as to suggest we are charlatans if we don't go along with it. I see this a lot, on a daily basis. "The research" is the basis of enterprises like the Campbell Collaboration, the promotion of various educational theories, and the authoring of well-meaning blog posts. But there is substantial reason to be sceptical. "All the old methods are in doubt. Even meta-analyses, which once were thought to yield a gold standard for evaluating bodies of research now seem somewhat worthless.... If you analyze 200 lousy studies, you’ll get a lousy answer in the end. It’s garbage in, garbage out." The crisis can't be wished away, nor can the basic lack of reproducibility be whitewashed. It's easy to hack your way to the conclusion you want to support. The phenomenon is well-documented, and we in education and technology should reserve judgements established through increasingly questionable methodology.

'I Love My Label': Resisting the Pre-Packaged Sound in Ed-Tech

Indie ed-tech, much like the indie music from which it takes its inspiration, seeks to offer an alternative to the algorithms, the labels, the templates, the profiling, the extraction, the exploitation, the control. It’s a big task – an idealistic one, no doubt. But as the book Our Band Could Be Your Life, which chronicles the American indie music scene of the 1980s .... notes, “Black Flag was among the first bands to suggest that if you didn’t like ‘the system,’ you should simply create one of your own.” If we don’t like ‘the system’ of ed-tech, we should create one of our own.

Infrastructural Violence | transmediale 2016

Communication and travel networks that open the world to us are the characteristics of globalization. At the same time we feel increasingly isolated, controlled, and threatened by those global systems. How can we react to or modify our dependence upon them? The term “structural power” is used in political theory to analyze the systematic exclusion and repression of minorities. In reference to that concept, this seminar will trace how “infrastructural power” shapes and structures today’s communicative and social foundations. Together with activists from Syria, Turkey, China, and Iran, Christoph Wachter and Mathias Jud have built several independent communication networks over the past years. This seminar explores independent networks such as theirs, with the goal of fostering personal empowerment. transmediale Co-Curricular is carried out in cooperation with Allianz Kulturstiftung

Without that class I would never have been inspired to keep pursuing classes that focused on digital platforms - a decision that ultimately added up to minor in Digital Studies. I've got my qualms with higher education, but my experience in your class, as well as some of Zach Whalen's, have proven to be invaluable in my post undergrad life. McCarthy's fifth book, it was published by Random House. The majority of the narrative follows a teenager referred to only as "the kid," with the bulk of the text devoted to his experiences with the Glanton gang, a historical group of scalp hunters who massacred Native Americans and others in the United States–Mexico borderlands from 1849 to 1850 for bounty, pleasure, and eventually out of sheer compulsion. The role of antagonist is gradually filled by Judge Holden, a huge, well-educated man depicted as completely bald from head to toe.

Filibuster (military) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A filibuster or freebooter, in the context of foreign policy, is someone who engages in an (at least nominally) unauthorized military expedition into a foreign country or territory to foment or support a revolution. The term is usually used to describe United States citizens who fomented insurrections in Latin America in the mid-19th century (Texas, California, Nicaragua, Colombia), but is also applicable in the modern day. Filibuster expeditions have also occasionally been used as cover for government approved deniable operations (see also False flag). A notable late 20th Century example of this would be the Argentinian 'scrap metal merchants' who landed on South Georgia at the outset of the Falklands War.

Revisionist Western - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some post-WWII Western films began to question the ideals and style of the traditional Western. Elements include a darker, more cynical tone, with focus on the lawlessness of the time period, favoring realism over romanticism. Anti-heroes are still common, but with stronger roles for women and more-sympathetic portrayal of Native Americans and Mexicans. Regarding power and authority, these depictions favor critical views of big business, the American government, masculine figures (including the military and their policies), and a turn to greater historical authenticity.

Notes on Teaching with Slack – Zach Whalen

Last semester, I started using Slack with one of my classes in an unofficial, low-key experiment — basically just a backchannel during class and a place to dump files and links. That was fun, so this semester I’ve gone even further. For Digital Studies 101, where my colleagues Lee Skallerup Bessette and Jesse Stommel are also teaching sections, we’ve got a single Slack domain for all 100+ of our students. For my other two classes, I’m trying to move all of the things that I used to do with our LMS (Canvas) into Slack, partly because Slack makes some of those LMS-type tasks even easier, but more so because moving into a new LMS-like tool forces me to re-evaluate what exactly I need from a tool like an LMS.

Preparing Students to be Literate Digitally in a Digitally Literate Environment of Their Own

In trying to identify opportunities to build the skills and practices individuals will need in digital environments, Kristy Pytash and I wrote up a submission for the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. In this submission, we contend that if we really want students to be digitally literate, they need to have a personalized learning space online that provides more than just a snapshot of their participation in one class or one school year. We argue that students should have a “domain of one’s own” or one canonical address online that students build up from Pre-K through higher ed.

We believe it would be in the best interest of everyone to step back and consider the implications. The strange tale of the man who was shot point-blank for mispronouncing ‘Newfoundland’ — in the Old West | National Post

Mill workers in the frontier town of Larkspur, Colo., saw two men enter a cabin in search of a dictionary. Seconds later, they heard a gunshot. The Webster’s had not even been thumbed through when mill worker William Atcheson, 23, threw a punch. Teamster John P. Davis recovered and, “true to his Texan breeding and education,” drew a revolver and fired point-blank into his assailant’s abdomen. The year was 1876 and Davis and Atcheson had just drawn first blood in a dispute that has divided Newfoundlanders ever since.

P2PU | Reclaim a personal space for education online

In this course we will build a personal website together, explore some of the reason for having a personal space online, especially in the educational context, and examine some of the challenges and opportunities provided by participating in online courses like this one. While our focus will be on the expectations of those in the education field, particularly graduate students and instructors, participants from other fields are welcome. Similarly, while we will only cover the particular details of Wordpress and Reclaim Hosting, the course may be of interest to those who prefer different tools or those interested in technology and online education more generally.

Protecting Your Site with BackWPup – ProfHacker - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education

I was reminded rather forcefully of the importance of making backups in late December, when I made an incredibly careless mistake on my personal site, and managed to delete just about everything (don’t ask — suffice it to say that I should have known better). Somehow I’d missed the memo about my hosting provider’s (I use Reclaim) excellent backup options. I panicked and submitted a support ticket, and they had me back up and running almost immediately. Lesson learned!

To assign an affiliate to an order which has already been placed and shows no referral, go to Orders > List and locate the order you want to assign to the affiliate. Once located, click on the Order ID number to open the details for that order. Now click the Manual Assign link in the Affiliate section, and you will then get a popup with a dropdown where you can choose the affiliate you want to assign it to, and then click Save to apply it. Caveats As commission is not earned on domain names it will not be possible to manually assign an order containing only a domain name to an affiliate.

Blockchains for Federated Student Data | Adam Croom

Let me try to paint a picture. A student verifies who they are through an organization similar to a domain name registrar or ICANN. After doing so, they are allowed to download a local application, desktop or mobile, and, for the sake of not getting lost, let’s call the application Self. On Self, minimal information has already been added by the registrar, and the student fills out however much of the rest of the profile they wish to do so. Click save. This is where the blockchain technology really enters into the picture. So far, the student has created an encrypted private profile hosted locally. There are two main ways of interacting with the profile: viewing it and editing it. A portion of the Self profile can be viewed via the web, but it requires the user to push information to the public profile. Once the push takes place, a version controlled instance of the student’s profile exists publicly via the web.

Soverign-Source Identity, Autonomy, and Learning

One of the cornerstones of BYU's plan to help students learn to learn is making them responsible for vital components of their online identity--a concept called sovereign-source identity. Most students come to the university with multiple digital identities including email and social media. The University adds to this by giving them another (or three). These identities put the student in the administrative domains of the issuing party and are given for the issuing parties' purposes and on their terms. A sovereign-source identity, in contrast, is one created and maintained by a person for their own purposes. On today's Internet, these usually take the form of a domain name1. By registering and using a domain name, a person can create an online identity that they control regardless of the administrative whims and business plans of someone else. In support of this, we're using Domain of One's Own (DoOO) to offer a domain name and associated hosting to every BYU student along with faculty and staff. We have about 1500 people signed up to date, and it continues to grow.

John Ford and John Wayne ~ Pappy and the Duke | American Masters | PBS

When the war started almost two years later, Ford was already in uniform and had finished five pictures in the year and a half since STAGECOACH. Amongst them were YOUNG MR. LINCOLN, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE LONG VOYAGE HOME, and HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. But for Ford these were just movies. The war would be the greatest adventure of his life — a call to arms by the country he loved that had given him everything. It also set up a conflict between Wayne and Ford that would ultimately push Wayne into politics in a major way. John Wayne was thirty-one-years old, married, and supporting three children when the war began. His newfound stardom was a realization of a dream he was not in a hurry to relinquish to a uniform. Throughout the war, Ford urged the young actor “to get in it,” and each time Wayne would beg off until he finished “just one more picture.” Ford was disappointed to say the least, and he let Wayne know it. Wayne was growing richer as other men died. As the war continued, Ford’s strong disappointment fueled a growing conflict between the men and fostered a sense of guilt within Wayne. Wayne’s decision to stay out of the service would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Unwound: No Energy | Album Reviews | Pitchfork

In the liner notes for No Energy, drummer Sara Lund writes, “We learned to communicate absolutely with our instruments, and while we were playing together, all personal tensions were erased. This band played with intention, never intending anything specific beyond honest expression.” If you think about Unwound from this angle, the band is cast in a spiritual light, and it makes sense. So much of the music here, from “Natural Disasters” to “Disappoint” to the fuzzed out tonal scrape of “Vern’s Answer to the Masses”, is head-spinning and angry, but very deeply so. Like Lund, bassist Vern Rumsey, and guitarist/singer Justin Trosper had made peace with whatever was roiling inside them by obsessively pushing it outward.

Jim Groom

Numero Group | Unwound | No Energy

As a robust rock underground got swallowed alive by the Major Label Industrial Complex, the very autonomous Unwound—Olympia, Washington's Great Noise Hope—toed the troublesome line between pay check and Check Engine light. Captured in the gaps of a ruthless touring schedule, defining fourth and fifth albums The Future of What and Repetition were issued in the back-to-back springs of 1995 and '96. Both find the band severing their post-hardcore roots, for gripping detours into Echoplex, kraut, D&B, and Mingus, as guided by a sun-worn copy of Book Your Own Fuckin' Life. No Energy collects both of these 1990s masterworks, beginning with Justin Trosper's home-made haircut stabs on "New Energy," continuing with Vern Rumsey's reanimating bass on "Corpse Pose," and closing in a wall of Sara Lund crash cymbals on "For Your Entertainment." This 33-song collection is buttressed by singles and period live tracks, a pile of double-exposed photographs, and a 10,000 word essay by latter-day Unwound diarist David Wilcox.

The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta | Novel PDF

The Life and Adventures of Joaquín Murieta: The Celebrated California Bandit was originally published in 1854 by John Rollin Ridge, writing as "Yellow Bird". It is considered to be one of the first novels written in California and the first novel to be published by a Native American.[1] The novel describes the life of a legendary bandit named Joaquín Murieta who, once a dignified citizen of Mexico, becomes corrupt after traveling to California during the Gold Rush. The book was originally published as a fictional biography, but was taken as truth by many historians of the time.[2] The novel received mass attention and was translated to various European languages, including French and Spanish.[3] Unfortunately, the novel was highly plagiarized and Ridge never received the economic gain he hoped for.[4]

Improving Privacy by Rethinking Architecture | The Scholarly Kitchen

If successful, it is possible to imagine such a decentralized architecture being extended to serve the needs of a researcher account in terms of library resources and content platforms. Indeed, I have argued that a cross-platform user account controlled by the researchers themselves would bring vast improvements in the processes of authorizing access to an appropriate copy of an information resource, while dramatically improving one’s control of one’s own data. Such an architecture represents a sea-change compared with today’s systems and it is no small thing to imagine the costs and logistical complexities of a transition. Even so, the work that Reclaim Hosting and BYU are undertaking is more than just experimental. It suggests that, when the political and organizational stars align, an entirely different architecture for the control of user data is possible.

Self-hosting provides the most flexibility whether you intend to use WordPress, Omeka, or Scalar. Some of those services, such as Editors' Choice InMotion Web Hosting, start at just a few dollars per month. I personally like Reclaim Hosting, which offers shared hosting plans starting at $25 annually with free domain registration. What I like about Reclaim is that users can install Web applications for WordPress, Omeka, and Scalar via an online control panel.

Brigham Young plans to let students control their data | Education Dive

"Schools are tracking student movements around campuses, incorporating data about how many times they visit the library or the tutoring center into performance data, merging that with student information system and learning management system data, and then developing predictive models to help counselors and students themselves. Giving students access to their own data is one thing, but letting them block others from seeing it is a different beast that could derail retention efforts."

Zone Apex / Naked Domain / Root Domain CNAME Support for Amazon EC2, Google App Engine and Other Cloud Hosts

One of the challenges of using a service like Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Cloud (EC2) is you need to point your DNS to a CNAME. The problem is the DNS RFC (RFC1033) requires the "zone apex" (sometimes called the "root domain" or "naked domain") to be an "A Record," not a CNAME. This means that with most DNS providers you can setup a subdomain CNAME to point to EC2, but you cannot setup your root domain as a CNAME to point to EC2.

Jim Groom

CNAME Flattening: RFC-compliant support for CNAME at the root – CloudFlare Support

CloudFlare uses CNAME Flattening to present a CNAME as an A record. The CloudFlare server generating the response follows the CNAME chain so that the response to the request from the client (for example, the browser) contains only non-CNAME data -- usually, an IP address. This effectively creates an A or an AAAA record. Without flattening, CloudFlare would serve the CNAME record directly to the recursor (the DNS resolver that translates the domain name to an IP address).
